Inside Bryce Fastener’s Custom Manufacturing Shop

When I asked Brent Campbell, CEO of Bryce Fastener, how things were going, he laughed and said, “It’s the normal mess.”
That phrase fits custom manufacturing well. Making screws, nuts, and bolts for high-risk applications is not always clean, quiet, or predictable. It is gritty work. It takes heavy equipment, skilled machinists, careful planning, and the ability to adjust when a job does not go exactly as expected.
Here in Gilbert, Arizona, July has arrived with temperatures reaching 106 degrees. Between the heat outside, the warehouse, and several large bolt orders moving through production, the shop has been running hot in more ways than one.
Still, the goal remains the same: build high-quality screws, bolts, and nuts for customers who need more than standard hardware.
What “the normal mess” looks like in custom fastener manufacturing
A standard screw or bolt holds parts together. A Bryce fastener often has another job too: helping customers control access, reduce unauthorized removal, and protect equipment or infrastructure from tampering.
That changes the way the work has to be planned.
Every order has to balance the customer’s application, the required size, the drive style, the material, the length, the production schedule, and the realities of the shop floor. A customer may need a custom length. A large order may require more machine time than expected. A cold header may run perfectly one day and need hours of troubleshooting the next.
Since Brian Hill’s retirement six months ago, our new Sales Director, Sam Edwards, has been learning that rhythm firsthand. Sales, pricing, lead times, and production all affect each other. In custom manufacturing, a quote is never just a quote. It has to connect to what the machines, materials, and machinists can support.
That is one reason Bryce takes so much pride in its shop team. Our machinists are not just running equipment. They are reading the machines, solving problems, checking details, and helping turn raw material into finished parts built for serious applications.
Big Bertha has been busy with large bolt orders
Our largest machine, Big Bertha, has been one of the busiest pieces of equipment in the shop this month. It has been running multiple orders for 1/2-13 and 5/8-11 bolts.
For these larger sizes, Bryce can manufacture high-security bolts up to 5 1/2 inches long. These parts may be used in heavy civil construction, utility, water system, foundation, and infrastructure applications where strength, fit, and access control all matter.
In these environments, the fastener is not an afterthought. It may help secure an access point, hold a critical component in place, or make unauthorized removal more difficult. That means the details matter from the beginning of the order through the final inspection.
Size, thread, length, head style, tooling, and application all affect how the part is made.
Why larger bolts require more planning
Large bolts are not something a shop simply rushes through production. The bigger the part, the more important setup and planning become.
The team has to think through thread requirements, finished length, heading, material behavior, machine time, tooling, and possible delays. A small issue at the heading stage can slow the entire job if it is not caught and corrected.
That is why experienced machinists are so important. They understand what a good part should look like, how the equipment should sound and feel, and when something needs to be adjusted before production continues.
For customers, that behind-the-scenes work matters. It is part of what helps a finished bolt function properly in the field.
Adding a backup 1/2 Waterbury cold header
With large orders continuing to stack up, Bryce took a proactive step to support production by adding a backup 1/2 Waterbury cold header for Big Bertha.
Redundancy matters in a manufacturing shop. When a key machine is responsible for important orders, backup capacity helps reduce the risk of one issue slowing down everything behind it. It also gives the team more flexibility when planning future work.
The Waterbury weighs more than a ton. Getting it into the warehouse required specialized freight services and a heavy-duty forklift. Moving a machine like that is not simple, but it is the kind of investment that helps support larger jobs and keeps the shop better prepared.
Cold headers are powerful, but they have personalities
Cold headers are impressive machines. They are also temperamental.
One day, a machine can run beautifully. The next day, it may punch a head off center and send the team into a full day of troubleshooting. That is not unusual. It is part of the reality of manufacturing.
Cold heading depends on the right material, tooling, setup, timing, and operator experience. When one part of that process is slightly off, the finished part can be affected. The job then becomes problem-solving: inspect, adjust, test, and keep working until the part is right.
That is the work customers usually do not see, but it is a major part of making custom fasteners.
The people behind the parts
Machines matter, but the people running them matter more.
Jimmy is one of the experts at handling Big Bertha and producing Bryce’s larger bolts. This month, he has been working on a batch of 5/8-11 x 1 1/2 Key-Rex security bolts.
That work takes experience. It takes knowing the machine, understanding the part, and noticing when something is even slightly off. The craftsmanship behind each order is one of the reasons Bryce can take on custom and application-specific work.

Why the work is worth it
Custom manufacturing can be messy, hot, unpredictable, and full of pivots. Machines need attention. Orders change. Lead times have to be managed. Large parts require planning. New equipment has to be moved, installed, and understood.
But the work is worth it.
Every order gives Bryce the opportunity to build parts that help customers protect public-facing equipment, infrastructure, and assets that need more than ordinary hardware. Whether the job calls for screws, bolts, nuts, or a custom solution, the purpose is the same: make the right part for the application.
