In South Carolina, Spartanburg County’s sewer district is now requiring all in ground, outside grease traps be secured against unauthorized access. Illegal dumping of hazardous chemicals led to the discovery of PCBs (Polychlorinated Biphenyls) in three Upstate sewer systems. The outside, in ground grease traps used by restaurants were not secured and could easily be accessed by anyone for unauthorized dumping. This is no small clean-up cost, but projected to cost the sewer treatment facilities millions of dollars.

Our Key-Rex® fasteners are currently being installed in North and South Carolina, as well as Georgia to secure these grease trap covers. This “higher security” application is a good example of why we rank Key-Rex® as a level 10 security fastener. We’re confident now that Key-Rex® is in action, illegal dumping of hazardous material will stop.
