In spite of increasingly sophisticated auto security systems, airbag theft is a rising problem, according to insurance sources. However, one unique fastener could hold the key to a dramatic reduction in this growing problem.

The KEYED-LOK™ bit a is a "Lock-n-Key Screw™" developed by Bryce Fastener, of Gilbert, Ariz., that offers a drive key configured and licensed for specific applications, such as airbag security. The tamperproof screws are machined with a unique head and a matching custom key bit, meaning only the customer can turn the screw.

"Customers own the one-of-a-kind socket and key configuration," said Bryce Campbell, president of Bryce Fastener. "This means they control the number of bits that are in circulation because it belongs to them. Other security bits, such as Torx-pins, drilled spanners, and Tri-wings have thousands of bits in circulation and are easy to obtain."

By using Bryce fasteners to secure airbags, thieves are faced with a nearly impenetrable screw, thereby reducing what has become big business on the auto parts black market and an increasingly dangerous situation for drivers.

According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), more than 50,000 airbags are stolen annually, resulting in a loss of more than $50 million to consumers and insurers. In 1996, State Farm Insurance estimated that 18 of every 10,000 cars broken into had an airbag stolen.

Most of these stolen airbags are bought illegally for as low as $25 apiece and then resold to unsuspecting consumers at prices of $1,100 or more. These parts are often damaged during the theft and can malfunction, putting drivers at risk.
