Solar Panel Security

October 27, 2011 — The solar power industry is really starting to take hold in the United States and especially in the southwest. Some of the largest solar generating stations are being constructed in very remote desert areas. The largest installation currently under construction in the State of California is being built in the Imperial Valley desert.

Securing these remote sites can be an expensive proposition. Even though the cost of solar panels has been coming down, they are still very expensive and are a target for thieves. Most if not all installations will be surrounded by fencing and some sort of perimeter alarm system and or video surveilance. These measures will do a good job detecting an incursion but long response times from first responders makes preventing the loss of solar panels very difficult.
